Forget about my danger; I only fear danger when I want to.

“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.”

Intenté entenderte, intenté amarte bien. La forma con la que sonríes y me tocas, siempre enciende mi corazón. Tus labios son como un fuego ardiendo en mi alma. Y la gente me pregunta de dónde eres. Ellos lo quieren saber.
I tried to understand you, I tried to love you right. The way you smile and touch me always sets my heart alight. Your lips are like a fire burning through my soul. And people ask me where you’re from. They really wanna know.

La verdad está en tus ojos. Y lo que veo es lo que quiero. Ayúdame a no olvidar jamás. Y sentir la brisa del mar. Como aquellos tiempos.
The truth is in your eyes. And what I see is what I want. Help me never to forget. And feel the sea breeze. Like those times.

We do not remember days, we remember moments

I’m speaking from the point of view of a teacher here in the Ateneo. As I grow older, I realize more and more over the past two or three years that you cannot do everything. You have to choose your battles, you have to choose the things that you want to focus on, you have to give up some, not because those things you give up aren’t important, but you have limited time and limited energy. When you are not focused, I have realized in myself that I don’t do the things that I do as well as I could have if only I have time and focus. Our energies are afraid, our energies are dissipated, and you end up being superficial. You are spread out too thinly and you realize it might give you the impression of being busy and being occupied… and you realize, ‘I think I’ve wasted my time.’ I think it’s a realization of somebody growing older.

There’s a common misunderstanding among all the human beings who have ever been born on the earth that the best way to live is to try to avoid pain and just try to get comfortable. You can see this even in insects and animals and birds. All of us are the same.
A much more interesting, kind, adventurous, and joyful approach to life is to begin to develop our curiosity, not caring whether the object of our inquisitiveness is bitter or sweet. To lead a life that goes beyond pettiness and prejudice and always wanting to make sure that everything turns out on our own terms, to lead a more passionate, full, and delightful life than that, we must realize that we can endure a lot of pain and pleasure for the sake of finding out who we are and what this world is, how we tick and how our world ticks, how the whole thing just is.

I can’t help wondering what we might have said if we hadn’t been stopped. Maybe we were just around the corner from something thrilling. Isn’t that the nature of a live conversation? It halts, it stutters, it doubles back, it soars. We might have found a small nugget, something off topic or unexpected.
